Designer Working in Silicon Valley.

HERE'S THE STORY OF HOW I WENT FROM FINE ARTS SCHOOL → PRODUCT EXPERIENCE IN TECH

Hi! I'm Lily (@designalily), a senior product designer living in San Francisco. I create content about my learnings from working in UX and tech. It has been quite a journey. I started my career on the East Coast, after graduating from fine arts school. I sought adventure and was keen to work in innovation. I decided to take a leap of faith and packed my entire life in two suitcases for a one-way ticket to San Francisco. I started my product design career from ground zero, with no network.

I PERSISTED AND NEVER GAVE UP, SEEING FAILURE AS GROWTH.

After immersing myself in tech, reading countless books, trying many classes, and failing 100+ interviews—I finally landed my first full-time offer, for senior product design! After that offer call, I cried and called my mom. Since then, I've been blessed to work my dream career and wake up without dreading Mondays. Currently, I have worked 5+ years in consumer tech. Outside of work, I have a passion for creating educational content that can help others thrive in their professional and personal development. I have helped designers land jobs at Meta, Shopify, Amazon, and more.

How I started sharing my stories online

  • ✧ Signed up for hackathons in San Francisco and noticed a lack of design community
  • ✧ Started a meetup (300+) for designers to meet in cafes and solve design exercises together
  • ✧ Filmed a live community workshop, sporadically decided to upload on YouTube, and was surprised it became a hit
  • ✧ Pandemic put the entire city on lockdown, so I went down the rabbit hole and discovered TikTok
  • ✧ 1,000 videos later, my content has received recognition across several platforms
